The War That Saved My Life is an outstanding, heart-warming, coming-of-age story set in the English countryside during World War 2 and is historical fiction at its best. Reminiscent of Goodnight Mister Tom, we highly recommend it as a holiday read for our younger Middle Years' students.
In Yr 8 IS classes, the geography focus this term is on tsunamis. Students are encouraged to use a variety of quality, reliable information they can access for their convenience from the iCentre website. An initial overview can be gained from encyclopedic articles in World Book Online, and further research and study can be supported by the World Geography & Culture database and ABC Splash resources.
Students in our Yr 8 classes are encouraged to become avid members of our reading community, but sometimes it is difficut to know what to read. With this in mind, we have curated a number of Pinterest boards that can help you find your next read. Viewing our boards, which include Book Trailers, #greatreads for the Middle Years, Book of the Week Recommendations and Series of Follow, is a great way to decide on what to read next.
This year we are excited to be offering Year 7 & 8 students the opportunity to use digital textbooks on the LearningField platform. This is an initiative from the Copyright Agency and instead of students having a single textbook, a subscription to LearningField offers students access to 95% of the Australian textbook market. At Mt Alvernia, we think it is important for students to build digital literacy and this is one avenue for this. For a more detailed introduction to what is on offer from LearningField
We have been building and refreshing our collection of resources on the Medieval Period. If you are teaching this period or have students wishing to research these times, we encourage you to come in and browse these books. Our collection covers everything from the Church, politics and warfare to the role of women, everyday life and festivals.
